Overview: The Causes and Cures of Depression

If I asked you 'what causes depression', what would you say?

There are so many unproven theories out there, and many people are making their fortunes off the back of all the misinformation flooding the world about the causes and cures of depression.

The theories range from the enormous, drug-company promoted idea of there being some sort of 'chemical imbalance' that causes depression, right down to the more fringe ideas that depression happens when you're not eating enough Omega 3, or getting enough of your B vitamins.

But really? Everyone is still guessing about what really causes depression, and how to really cure it. Even the much touted 'chemical imbalance' is actually just an unproven scientific hypothesis, that has as many holes in it as a piece of swiss cheese.

Without going into details, let me share just one idea about serotonin, that changes the whole picture about serotonin levels in the brain being the cause of depression: 99% of your serotonin is actually being made in your gut.

So until scientists figure out how to measure all the serotonin running around your small intestine, as well as your brain, they have no idea how much of a 'chemical imbalance' you may actually have, or what that actually means, depression-wise.

So now you know what probably isn't causing your depressions, let me tell you what I think probably is:

Depression is caused by:

  • Weak energy in your spleen meridian;
  • Taking your blessings for granted (aka, not recognising all the good that's in your life, for whatever reason);
  • Spending a lot of time around negative, critical and abusive people who make you feel worthless and invisible;
  • Getting pulled into the homolateral energy state - where the energy in your body stops crossing over, and starts to flow in parallel lines up and down, leading to feelings of heaviness, fatigue and an inability to get off the couch, or out of bed in the morning.

You can avoid falling into depression by:

  •           Training yourself to be grateful;
  •           Strengthening your Spleen Meridian energy;
  •           Getting out of the 'homolateral' energy state;
  •           Exercising and / or dancing regularly.

Let me leave you with this final tip: in one of the few scientific studies done to compare the efficacity of anti-depressants versus regular exercise (at least 30 minutes exercise, at least three times a week) - exercise came out on top.

Not only was it more effective at getting people out of depression, it was also scientifically proven to be far more effective at keeping people out of depression, long-term.

So if you really want to permanently cure your depression, grab your sneakers, and kiss your chemical imbalance goodbye.
