One of the major 'foundations' of modern science is the axiomatic belief that the world has continued on, unchanging, for billions of years, and that all processes on earth - from ice ages, to mountain ranges forming, to so-called 'evolution' - all took billions and billions of years to occur.
As this is poppycock, there is ABSOLUTELY NO scientific proof to back up this belief in the principle of 'uniformity', to give it its proper scientific name. But there is tons and tons of evidence that points in exactly the opposite direction, i.e. that massive changes to the earth have occurred within the last 6,000 years or so, and that these changes have been swift and instantaneous.
Read on to see how modern science has been ignoring the evidence that argues AGAINST evolution and the principle of uniformity, for well over 150 years....
In 1940, F. Rainey from the University of Alaska described a curious scene unfolding along the banks of the Tanana River gold rush occurring at that time:
“Wide cuts, often several miles in length and sometimes as much as 140 ft in depth are now being sluiced out along stream valleys tributary to the Tanana in the Fairbanks District. In order to reach gold-bearing gravel bed and overburden of frozen silt or ‘muck’ is removed with hydraulic giants. This ‘muck’ contains enormous numbers of frozen bones of extinct animals such as the mammoth, mastodon, super-bison and horse.”
All these animals were shown to have died in recent times, measured in a few thousands, and not millions of years, even according to standard Scientific dating methods. Rainey found worked flints in this ‘muck’, including spear points that were found in situ stabbed through the jaw of a lion, or the tusk of a mammoth. He concluded that: “men were contemporary with extinct animals in Alaska.”
F.C. Hibben from the University of Mexico takes up the story:
“Although the formation of the deposits of muck is not clear, there is ample evidence that at least portions of this material were deposited under catastrophic conditions. Mammal remains are for the most part dismembered and disarticulated, even though some fragments yet retain, in their frozen state, portions of ligaments, skin, hair and flesh. Twisted and torn trees are piled in splintered masses… At least four considerable layers of volcanic ash may be traced in these deposits, although they are extremely warped and distorted.”
Clearly, whatever killed and dismembered millions of these animals, and uprooted and splintered millions of trees at the same time, was not a ‘gentle accretion of mud’, as the evolutionists would have us believe - and all this happened just a few thousand years ago, and was witnessed by human beings.
The Liakhov Islands are located 600 miles inside the Polar Circle, to the north of Siberia. Liakhov reported to his sovereign, Russia’s Catherine II that: “Such was the enormous quantity of mammoths’ remains that it seemed that the island was actually composed of the bones and tusks of elephants, cemented together by icy sand.”
The Islands of New Siberia were discovered in 1805-6, and were similarly found to be packed full of the remains of creatures who thrive in hot climates: “The soil of these desolate islands is absolutely packed full of the bones of elephants and rhinoceroses in astonishing numbers.”
How did millions of sun-loving elephants and rhinoceroses meet their death, and get deep-frozen, in Siberia? Some of these creatures were recovered with their eyeballs still intact: they were flash frozen in a matter of hours after dying.
Geologist geologist J.D. Dana wrote about this discovery:
“The encasing in ice of huge elephants, and the perfect preservation of the flesh, shows that the cold finally became suddenly extreme, as of a single winter’s night, and knew no relenting afterward.”
Writing in 1910, a British researcher called Whitley marveled that: “neither trees, nor shrubs, not bushes, exist… and yet the bones of elephants, rhinoceroses, buffaloes and horses are found in this icy wilderness in numbers which defy all calculation.”
But that wasn’t the only mystery posed by the New Siberian Islands. Explorers also found a number of what they termed ‘wood hills’, which ranged between 250-300 ft high, and contained the petrified trunks of millions of uprooted trees, cemented together by frozen sand, and layered with millions of splintered and crushed animal skeletons.
In 1848, German scientist G.A. Erman wrote:
“On the summit of the hills, they [the tree trunks] lie flung one upon another in the wildest disorder, forced upright in spite of gravitation, and with their tops broken off or crush, as if they had been thrown with great violence from the south on a bank, and there heaped up.”
Immanuel Velikovsky explains how this occurred:
“A hurricane, apparently, uprooted the trees of Siberia and flung them to the extreme North; mountainous waves of the ocean piled them in huge hills, and some agent of a bituminous nature transformed them into charcoal, either before or after they were deposited and cemented in drifted masses of sand that became baked in sandstone.”
But what could batter, drown, burn and then bake together such masses of uprooted forests and animals, and do it so quickly that these remains would freeze perfectly solid in just a few hours?
Evolution has no answer for this. But there is a natural explanation that fits exactly with what we’ve been discussing on this blog and over on Emunaroma, about how the earth was really formed, and when.
‘Erratic boulders’ is the name given to rocks that have a different formation, or composition, from the places where they are found. For example, the erratic boulder called ‘Pierre a Martin’ measures more than 10,000 cubic feet, and is to be found on the Jura Mountain range above Lake Geneva, in Switzerland.
Yet it comes from the Alps, many miles distant. How did ‘Pierre a Martin’ get up a mountain, tens of miles away?
How did so many ‘erractic boulders’ originating in Norway somehow travel across the sea to come to rest on the British coastline, and also high up in the Harz mountains, in Central Germany?
The same can be asked of large chunks of rock that somehow travelled from Finland over to the Carpathians, and even to Moscow, while other blocks of granite from Canada were ripped off and scattered all over Maine, New York, Massachusetts and Ohio, to name but a few - and are frequently found on the tops of the highest mountain ranges.
How did they get there?
Some of these stones weigh 10,000 tons or more, like that in Warren County, Ohio (13,500 tons), while the chalk stone erratic boulder in Malmo, Sweden measures three miles long. Even today, mankind hasn’t got the sort of technology that would enable it to transport a three mile long rock overland.
GEORGES CUVIER, FOUNDING FATHER OF PALEONTOLOGY
French naturalist Georges Cuvier was the founding father of paleontology (the study of fossil bones). In 1827, after spending many a long month studying the gypsum deposits located in Montmatre in Paris, and elsewhere in France, he wrote that:
“It has frequently happened that lands which have been laid dry have been covered again by the waters, in consequence either of their being engulfed in the abyss, or of the sea having merely risen over them…These repeated eruptions and retreats of the sea have been neither slow nor gradual; on the contrary, most of the catastrophes that have occasioned them have been sudden…
“Life has often been disturbed on this earth by terrific events. Numberless living beings have been the victims of these catastrophes; some, which inhabited the dry land, have been swallowed up by inundations; others, which peopled the waters, have been laid dry, their very races have been extinguished forever.”
The limestone deposits that Cuvier was examining painted a clear picture of large swathes of what is now France being deep underwater before becoming a land swarming with reptiles, before again being submerged under the waves and becoming home to marine life, then once again becoming land, this time populated by mammals - and so the cycle repeated itself again.
“Admitting that there has been a gradual diminution of the waters; that the sea has transported solid matter in all directions; that the temperature of the globe is either diminishing or increasing - none of these cases could have overturned our strata, enveloped large animals in ice, together with their flesh and skin, laid dry marine [animals]… and lastly, destroyed numerous species, and even entire genera.”
Cuvier’s observation is still wholly applicable today. So what did cause all these things to happen?
(We already know WHO caused these things to happen, i.e. God, the Creator of the world, and why, as set out by our Midrashim. We also know how many times the strata were overturned before man came on the scene, i.e. 974 times, plus at least a couple more timeS in the last 5777 years, during the time of Enosh, and during the time of Noah’s flood. But it’s amazing to see that the scientific evidence increasingly stacks up IN FAVOR of the genuine, Jewish account of the planet’s dramatic history. And there’s still so much more to come…)
TIGER REMAINS IN YORKSHIRE CAVES
William Buckland was a professor of geology at Oxford University at the beginning of the 19th century. In 1823, he published a work called ‘Relics of the Flood’, which detailed a number of strange findings that he attributed to some massive, world-wide ‘deluge’ or natural disaster.
For example, Buckland had excavated a cave in Kirkdale, Yorkshire, that was at an elevation of 80 foot, which contained the teeth and bones of a veritable zoo, including rhinoceroses, hippotamuses, horses, deer, tigers, bears, wolves, hyenas, foxes, hares, rabbits, pigeons, larks and ducks.
How did this conglomeration of animals come to be in the United Kingdom in the first place, and what where they doing crushed together in a cave in Yorkshire?
The same question could be asked about the group of hippopotamus, reindeer and mammoth found at Brentford, in the South East of England, the reindeers and grizzly bears that were at Cefn in Wales, and the reindeers, cave lions and hyenas that were found crushed together in a cave in Bleadon, Somerset.
To quote Velikovsky again: “According to the prophecy of Isaiah (11:6) in messianic times to come the lion and the calf would pasture together. But even prophetic vision hasn’t conceived of a reindeer from snow-covered Lapland and a hippopotamus from the tropical Congo River living together on the British Isles.”
But while these animals certainly died together, and their bones were entombed together, it’s highly unlikely that they actually lived together for any length of time. Buckland asserted that he was: “nearly certain that if any change of climate has taken place, it took place suddenly.”
Like Cuvier before him, Buckland was of the opinion that the flood, or natural disaster that caused these strange burial groupings must have occurred no more than 5000-6000 years previously.
He concluded: “What the cause was, whether a change in the inclination of the earth’s axis, or the near approach of a comet, or any other cause or combination of causes purely astronomical, is a question the discussion of which is foreign to the object of the present memoir.”
THE MASS EXTINCTION OF FISH LIFE
At the same time that the Victorian researchers were amassing accounts of the violent, dramatic and almost instant death of millions of animals on land, the same picture was also emerging from the depths of the oceans, too.
Writing in 1865, Hugh Miller examined the Old Red Sandstone strata located in Northern Scotland, and noted that:
“some terrible catastrophe involved the sudden destruction of fish of an area at least a hundred miles from boundary to boundary, perhaps much more… [the remains] exhibit unequivocally the marks of violent death…. The remains too, appear to have suffered nothing from the after-attacks of predaceous fish; none such seem to have survived. The record is one of destruction, at once widely spread and total….”
Again, this was not an unusual scene. Writing about what he’d seen in northern Italy, Buckland wrote:
“The circumstances under which the fossil fishes are found at Monte Bolca seem to indicate that they perished suddenly…All these fishes must have died suddenly… and have been speedily buried in the calcareous sediment.”
The same held true for fish deposits found in the German Harz Mountains, and in Saarbrucken, and Oensingen in Switzerland, and Aix-en-Provence in France, and also in Ohio, Michigan, Arizona and California.
Millions upon millions of fish died a sudden, agonizing death, and then were instantly buried and ‘fossilised’ by sand and gravel as a violent upheaval pulled the sea bottom up out of the ocean, and turned their formerly watery environment into dry land.
TO SUM THIS BIT UP:
While modern science likes to pretend that the world is many millions of years old, and that nothing ‘dramatic’ ever occurred, and certainly not within a few thousand years of our present time, and certainly not instantly, the scientific evidence demonstrating the exact opposite is literally found all over the world, in the fossil record.
Land became sea, and sea became land, repeatedly, literally overnight. Mountains became valleys, and vice-versa, instantly. Whole swathes of formerly tropical, lush countryside was destroyed, petrified and then instantly flash-frozen - and much of this was witnessed by modern man.
So far, the scientific evidence is clearly showing score one for the Torah’s account of the history of the world, and score zero for evolution, and modern science’s theories of what occurred, when, and how.
But there is still a huge amount of additional scientific evidence that we need to enter into the record, in the next few posts.
To be continued…
Ah, where to start with this subject? There are so many false ‘gods’ at this point - false narratives, falsified facts, false pictures of reality, false assumptions, faulty theories - that it could really be a life-long work just to start skimming off the first layer.
Still, every journey begins with the first step, and every story begins with the first word, so let’s begin with the false ‘god’ of Radiocarbon Dating.
If you believe the scientists, radiocarbon dating is an infallible method of measuring the age of artifacts, plant life, archaeological, human and animal remains, remnants of previous civilization and epochs on earth.
The basic idea behind radiocarbon dating is that it ‘works’ by measuring how much radioactive, or ‘radio’ carbon (14C) is released into the atmosphere over a certain period of time, as the carbon (12C) contained in the organic material being studied degrades and decomposes.
Radiocarbon dating was the brainchild of one Willard F. Libby, who published his treatise on radiocarbon dating in 1952 - and clearly stated the limitations of radiocarbon Dating right up front, as honest scientists were once wont to do.
Libby made the following observations about the accuracy of the method:
1) The atmosphere, biosphere and the hydrosphere (oceans) are the three reservoirs of radiocarbon on earth, with the seas by far and away containing the greatest concentration of radiocarbon.
If the quantity of water in the hydrosphere had changed substantially over the last 40,000 years (to use Libby’s own chronology), and / or the amount or carbon diluted in the oceans had substantially changed over this time period then radiocarbon dating wouldn’t return an accurate result.
(Park all these bits of info in the back of your brain as we go along, we’ll sum it all up neatly at the end.)
2) If the quantity and / or intensity of cosmic rays (another way of describing the particles of energy released by the sun and other celestial bodies, that are constantly bombarding the earth and which are part of our space weather) had substantially changed of this same period of time, then again radiocarbon dating wouldn’t return an accurate result.
Of course, at the time that Libby was doing his research, no-one in the hallowed halls of science doubted for a moment that the world was billions, even trillions of years old, and that the most exciting event that had happened to the planet in the last 50,000 years was just a very slow accretion of mud, well on the way to forming the next Mount Everest in a few more billion years… (sarcasm mine).
RADIOCARBON DATING RETURNS SOME INCREASINGLY ODD RESULTS
But the truth is that right from the start, radiocarbon dating started to return some very odd results.
For example, when wood grown in the 20th century was radiocarbon dated, it constantly appeared to be ‘older’ than wood from the 19th century. This was explained away, by some guy called Suess, who claimed that mass industrial burning of fossil fuels like coal and oil had changed the ratio between carbon and radiocarbon in the biosphere.
So henceforth, any human remains, animal parts or vegetation from the 20th century onwards would show up as being ‘older’, according to standard radiocarbon dating techniques, than stuff that actually preceded it by a century, or more, according to the calendar.
But never mind! Radiocarbon was still a peerlessly accurate way of dating everything else in the world !!! (sarcasm mine).
Which is when the next set of awkward data started to show up - in droves - that showed that radiocarbon dates were often between 500-700 years out, according to what was presumed to be the fixed historical date of the organic matter being tested.
This was particularly the case with Egyptian artifacts and the standard chronology assigned to ancient Egypt. This perplexing situation suggested that either, the standard chronology being used by Egyptologists was completely ‘off’, or the radiocarbon dating method was inaccurate.
Both views were actually true, but for different reasons.
Over the very short term, i.e. the last 4,000 years or so, radiocarbon dating is actually fairly accurate. Which is when science started to stumble over other awkward ‘data’ from radiocarbon experiments, including some which showed:
1) The last so-called ‘ice-age’ actually only occurred 3,500 years ago (Rubin and Suess, Geological Survey of the USA.)
2) Oil, which science claims takes millions of years to form, was radiocarbon dated by PV Smith of the Esso Research Lab in 1950 at a petroleum-bearing formation off the Gulf, who reported the ‘surprising’ discovery that it was formed in what’s called ‘Recent’ sediment, and therefore “must have been deposited in the last 9,200 (sic) years.”
(Again, set aside the Torah’s (accurate!) dating of the world for now. We’re just trying to show here that even according to the scientists’ own methods and gauge of time, so many of the scientific theories about life on our planet are just plain wrong.)
How could science explain this contradiction?
(The short answer is that they couldn’t, so they hastily shelved any of the radiocarbon data that didn’t ‘fit’ with their preconceived notions, across a whole bunch of disciplines.)
But if that wasn’t enough to think about, there was another huge problem with the radiocarbon dating method: The world has been through many, enormously dramatic natural upheavals and cataclysms since it was created, 5,777 years ago.
Authentic Jewish sources clearly spell this out (see THIS article) - as do many other 'ancient' traditions from other civilisations that modern science likes to dismiss as imaginative hogwash. Let’s very briefly sum up the main points that are covered more detail in that article, before we continue:
1) GOD CREATED 974 WORLDS BEFORE THIS ONE.
There were 974 generations and worlds created BEFORE our current one, in a process that lasted 2,000 years.
2) PREVIOUSLY, WHENEVER GOD DESTROYED ONE OF THESE 974 WORLDS, HE DID THAT BY OVERTURNING THE EARTH FROM THE T’HOM, I.E., FROM THE DEPTH OF THE WATER TABLE
God destroyed the previous 974 generations by flipping the earth’s crust over from the water table, completely destroying all life on the planet in an instant, and returning the world to TOHU AND BOHU, the Hebrew terms for chaos and ‘nothingness’.
3) GOD WILL CHANGE PLANET EARTH (OUR EXISTING ONE) 7 TIMES BEFORE MOSHIACH COMES
Those seven world are:
World 1: Adam and Eve (Year 1 in the Hebrew calendar, 5777 years ago)
Midrash (Bereishit Rabba 10:4) tells us:
Before Adam HaRishon sinned, the heavenly bodies had shorter and quicker orbits. Once man sinned, God caused the celestial orbs to travel in longer and slower circuits. Since then, the apparent circuit of the sun takes 12 months, the orbit of the moon, just under thirty days, etc
Rav Dovid Brown explains:
“In order for the solar year to have been less than 12 months, the earth would necessarily have been closer to the sun that it is now…If the earth was closer to the sun, the energy received from the sun would be greater…greater energy would result in a more powerful earth with capabilities inconceivable to us…The loss of this greater energy would result in a weaker earth and inferior beings inhabiting it.”
To put this another way, the intensity of cosmic rays bombarding planet earth DEFINITELY CHANGED, from current norms, when Adam and Eve were around.
World 2: From Adam to Enosh (Year 1 to Year 1140 in the Hebrew calendar, when Enosh died)
There was a partial flood of the world at this time, and also new mountain ranges sprang up overnight, undoubtedly due to ‘action at a distance’ effects from a passing planet-sized comet or celestial body. Again, this would dramatically affect the atmosphere, biosphere and hydrosphere, rendering modern radiocarbon dating measurements obsolete.
World 3: Enosh to Noah’s flood (Year 1140 - Year 1656 in the Hebrew calendar)
Sforno (Parshat Noach 8:22) explains that:
Before the mabbul (Noah’s flood), the apparent circuit of the sun was directly around the equator.
The change in the attitude of the earth after the mabbul, so that the earth faces the sun at in inclination of the axis, is the cause of the varying seasons.
Before the mabbul, the climate was perpetually warm due to the sun striking the earth directly at the equator. That environment was extraordinarily robust compared to the modern world’s, and the earth had greater energy in all its members, mineral, vegetable, animal and human.
Again, clearly the cosmic rays bombarding the planet during this period weren’t occurring at the same relatively ‘fixed’ levels and intensity observed in more modern times.
World 4: The Mabbul (Noah’s flood) (Year 1656 in the Hebrew calendar, 4121 years ago)
Geologically: A foot of the earth’s topsoil is washed away, the rest of the earth is ‘mixed’ with boiling water that contains sulphur, polluting the earth’s ground and weakening it for the rest of the world’s natural lifespan.
Also, the earth received NO ENERGY from the celestial bodies throughout this time, also severely weakening its ability to produce food and support life.
World 5 - aging, physical degeneration and illness (Beginning around the year 2000 in the Hebrew calendar)
The Midrash (in Pesikta D’Rav Kahana, 22) tells us:
“When Yitzhak was born [in 2048], God increased the light emitted by the heavenly luminaries.”
The Gemara in Tractate Chullin, 91B, also explains how the sun changed its course twice, during the lifetime of Yaacov Avinu (who was born in 2108).
And then there were other enormous upheavals too, at the time of Moses and the Israelite exodus from ancient Egypt.
These astronomical changes brought about changes in the cosmic radiation bombarding planet Earth that had direct and immediate results on how the human body aged, degenerated and became ill, from that point on - all of which is born out by the latest findings in bio-physics.
And all these events also affected the fundamental basis for the accuracy of radiocarbon dating.
The last major changes to the physical nature of the world occurred in the time of King Hezekiah (who ruled for 29 years, around Year 3200 in the Hebrew calendar).
In this particular instance, the Midrash in Esther Rabba (3:1) explains that the world ‘gained’ five hours as a result of this astronomical shift, as measured by the ancient sun-clock of Ahaz.
THE WORLD HAS CHANGED, FUNDAMENTALLY, AT LEAST SIX TIMES IN THE LAST 5777 YEARS
Which is why radiocarbon dating simply doesn’t work, accurately, for anything going back more than around 4,100 years.
That’s also why radiocarbon dating happily assigns dates in the millions (and even billions…) of years to organic matter that is actually only maximally 8,000 years’ old (including the Torah’s assignment of 2000 years to the 974 worlds that preceded ours), because it’s working on the twin assumptions stated at the beginning that radiocarbon decays today at the same rate it always has - which is simply not true!
To quote Immanuel Velikovsky, who painstakingly pieced together so much of the scientific evidence that clearly shows that the events described above did occur, and have left innumerable traces even today:
“Bursts of cosmic rays and of electrical discharges on an interplanetary scale would make organic life surviving the catastrophes much richer in radiocarbon.” So any radiocarbon test would date these remains as being much younger than they actually are.
At the same time: “If invasion of the terrestrial atmosphere by ‘dead’ (non-radioactive) carbon from volcanic eruptions, meteoric dust, burning oil and coal and centuries-old forests predominated the picture, than the changed balance of radioactive and radio-inert carbon would make everything in the decades following the events appear much older.”
And on Noah’s flood specifically, Velikovsky writes that: “The Deluge increased the water basin, or hydrosphere, on earth… It’s quite possible that the volume of water was more than doubled on earth in this one cataclysm.”
STOPPING THE CRITICS IN THEIR TRACK
At this point in the story, the people who like to believe that the world is 14 billion years old (at least) and who have devoted their lives to the church and theology of evolution, and who hate even the suggestion that God might actually exist, and that the Torah is actually true, will start jumping up and down and playing their ‘scientific evidence’ card.
“Where’s the evidence for these statements?” they’ll demand. “Where’s the scientific proof for this heresy that radiocarbon dating is unreliable?!”
(As a side note, if you have two months spare I highly recommend reading through the whole of Immanuel Velikovsky’s collected works on this subject, but at the very least his epic ‘Earth in Upheaval’.)
I’m guessing you don’t have that much time to spare, so this is your lucky day: I’m going to start summarizing a lot of the evidence that shows, incontrovertibly, that the earth underwent a number of enormous upheavals within the last 5,000 years.
It’s scary reading, especially if you don’t believe in God, or don’t want to believe in God, which is usually the real problem.
But scientific evidence is scientific evidence, after all, and should be admitted into the records of discussion. So we’ll pick this back up in the next post, BH.
(See the following sources: Chagiga 13b, Midrash Bereishit Rabba 3:7, Midrash Tehillim 34:1. Zohar Bereshit 25a).
Midrash Tanchuma (Yitro 14) tells us: “When God sought to give the Torah He first offered it to all the nations other than Yisroel, but they refused it. He wanted to return the world to its dimension of water. When Yisroel accepted the Torah, the world was stabilised.”
 Pirkay d’Rabbi Eliezer (18) says:
God created seven worlds, or which his favorite is the last. Six of them to come and go, and one which is pure Shabbat.

So, for sure you’ve noticed how just about everyone you know, including yourself (if you’re honest…) is starting to exhibit some extreme mood swings and strong emotions, right? Here’s just a small selection of what I’ve heard and / or seen going on around me in the last little while:
One normally very calm, sweet and forgiving person told me they had such an uncharacteristic rage fit with a rude shopping assistant that they left the store shaking with anger, and it took them hours and hours to calm down again afterwards…
Another person snapped and violently attacked their spouse…
Another person got plunged into the biggest pit of despair and overwhelm about a problem that, yes is a problem, but not SUCH a big problem to merit such a enormous reaction…
Someone else got so overwhelmed by feelings of existential loneliness that they proposed marriage to someone they barely knew (thank God, the person turned them down…)
I could go on, but I’m sure you have your own examples of extreme, unusual reactions, decisions and behaviours going on all around you, and also inside you.
So what the heck is going on?!?
There’s a number of answers to this question, and the more spiritual answers you’ll find over on my other blog, at www.emunaroma.com. But on this blog, I try to concentrate on the more tangible explanations, or the visible processes that God is using to create a particular reaction or set of circumstances.
So what I think is going on, within that paradigm, is that the huge, unexplained body that’s currently in our solar system, and that goes by the various names of ‘Planet X’, ‘Nibiru’, ‘Kochav Yaacov’, or some other comet nomenclature is hugely affecting the bio-electrical structure of our planet - and the humans who live here.
(Again, I know this can sound pretty bizarre and ‘out there’ if you haven’t already been introduced to how the universe, world and human health actually really works, so if that’s you, you may want to take a look at these articles before you continue:)
We’re all kind of feeling ‘subliminally stressed’ at the moment, as our bio-electrical systems are being disrupted by the increased ions, protons, whatever they are in the atmosphere, that are part and parcel of what’s called the ‘solar wind’, or the energy that comes streaming in our direction from the sun.
If you take a look at THIS article, you’ll see how the universe really works, and is electrical in nature, and how when there’s a large comet / planet circling around our solar system, that causes the electrical activity between all the other bodies in the solar system, including the sun and planet earth, to go haywire.
So in a nutshell, the same phenomena that’s causing all these hurricanes in the US and the Caribbean (and even in the UK…), and unusually destructive wildfires all over the world, and massive earthquakes in Italy and Mexico, and floods in the Indian subcontinent, and exploding volcanoes in the ‘ring of fire’ in the Pacific, and also all the earthquake swarms being noted in the US and elsewhere - it’s also affecting us, you and me, on a micro level.
It’s making us feel increasingly ‘subliminally stressed’, which means we’re going into FIGHT-FLIGHT-FREEZE-FAWN mode without even realizing it, and that we have much less patience, generosity, kindness or self-awareness than usual.
We’re all walking around with hair-triggers, prepared to let anyone and everyone have it.
Why is God doing this?
Because He wants us to stop running away from our repressed negative emotions and bad character traits, and to actually acknowledge them and deal with them properly.
You, lady, have an anger issue! That’s why you keep sending out such atrocious emails to people, and commenting so acerbically on other people’s blogs.
You, sir, are sunk in despair and apathy! That’s why you drink so much and spend so much of your time glued to the telly, watching YouTube vids on your massive 50 inch screen.
You, madam, really hate and resent your parents, and you never, ever dealt with it! That’s why now, you find it so hard to enjoy your own family life, and you have a nervous breakdown every time another family get-together looms.
And so on and so forth.
But right now, God’s decided that we can’t run away from this stuff anymore. It’s time to look it squarely in the face, acknowledge the problems, and try to fix them.
And if we don’t do that, then at least in our lives, the ‘crazy days’ we’re experiencing are only going to come more furious, and more frequently.
Not on purpose, of course, but they just have SO many different activities scheduled between 11pm and 3 am - the time when really, I absolutely, positively have to be in bed, ASLEEP - and trying to figure out how to keep them happy and well-adjusted and me alive is proving to be quite tricky.
I live in downtown Jerusalem, where until a few months’ ago there were stabbings regularly happening almost every week (and during one really horrible period of time, almost every day…).
When terrorists aren’t trying to stab people and / or shoot them and / or run them down on purpose, my neighborhood is actually really pretty safe and genteel. But the trouble is, you really never know when the next ‘Ahmed the stabber’ is going to show up, and there’s something about trying to go to sleep when your teens are out of the house that seem to bring all these paranoid fears rapidly boiling to the surface.
So here we are, stuck in a paradigm where they (rightly…) want to have the freedom to be teens, and to do the things that teens like to do in the middle of the night, while I (rightly…) want to be able to sleep at least six hours a night so my brain doesn’t completely dissolve and drip out my ears.
I’m typing this on around four hours’ sleep, and I can literally barely see straight.
Which brings me to another point I’ve been pondering recently, about how so much of what we’re regularly taught is COMPLETELY NECESSARY FOR HEALTH can only really happen in a people-less, hermetically-sealed bubble.
It seems that health gurus that preach the benefit of 8-9 hours sleep every single night, and the importance of getting to bed by 10pm, just don’t have teens to contend with. Or small children. Or elderly parents, who often have their own dramas and difficulties that we need to help out with. Or friends. Or social lives (unless you count all those obsessive, daily ‘hot yoga’ classes). Or spouses who don’t always fit their nervous breakdowns, cries for help, late nights at work and desire to have an evening out into the ‘ONLY BEFORE 10PM’ box.
THIS ISN'T THE FIRST TIME THEY'VE TRIED TO KILL ME
Not that my teens are only trying to kill me by severely biting into my beauty sleep. In the past, they’ve also tried to kill me by absolutely refusing to pretend that probiotic sauerkraut is a salad, the sugar-free anything is eatable, that brown bread - and brown pasta and brown rice - is just as tasty as the real, white deal, and by forcing me to make at least two suppers a day - healthy for me, and yummy for them.
At the height of my healthy-food obsession, I was getting into regular fights with my kids (who were not even teens, at that stage) because they (rightly…) didn’t want to be forced into eating stuff they didn’t like just because it was healthy, and I (rightly…) didn’t want to be making them white pasta - which they absolutely love to bits!!! Especially with tons of high-fat cows’ cheese grated all over it!!! - that was also giving them stomach aches, zits and mucous issues.
Again, I come back to the idea that the healthy eating fanatics that insist that their kids just LURVE all that sprouted stuff, and kale cookies, and avocado chocolate mousse (which btw IS really yummy…) either have kids that are completely different from mine in every way, shape and form and / or are complete control freaks who give their kids no free choice and / or are lying.
But my teens aren’t going anywhere soon - thank God! - so I have to continue trying to figure out how to tread that fine line between doing enough to stay healthy, without causing them to go completely insane by insisting that I have everything my own way, all the time.
God gave me my teens. God made teens temporarily retarded, so they think they don’t need to sleep properly and eat enough, and they forget that while they get to sleep in until 2pm in the afternoon, other people in the house actually have jobs to do, and errands to run, that require them to be awake much, much earlier.
In the meantime, I’m learning that while 10 hours sleep is nice, five hours sleep is also doable, at least some of the time. If you don’t mind feeling like a zombie, sprouting a whole bunch of wrinkles and losing all pretense of coherent thought.
Once you’ve been in the ‘alternative health’ game for a while, you start to realize that a lot of what passes as ‘healthy’ eating is actually an eating disorder in disguise.
It can be so very difficult to spot this, especially initially, because deep down we all know that at least on some basic level, we are what we eat, and the more fruit and veg we can get down us, and the more whole grains we knock back, and the more ice-cream, margarine and jelly beans we avoid, the better it’s probably going to be for us, health-wise.
BUT - there’s a line that’s so easily crossed when ‘eating healthy’ actually turns into ‘eating disordered’, and in this post, I want to try to pin down where that line actually is.
THE FIRST RED FLAG: EVERYTHING IS BOILED DOWN TO FOOD
One big red flag is when the ‘healthy eating’ person starts to bring all their problems and issues - and everyone else’s problems and issues back down to food. Got a headache? It’s a food issue. Feeling sad, anxious or upset about something? It’s a food issue. Having serious relationship difficulties with your parents, spouse or kids? Man, you just need to eat more seaweed and steer clear of red meat!!!
And so on and so forth, until the whole awesome complexity of being a sentient human being with a spiritual dimension and a highly complicated inner emotional world is boiled down to how much gluten or sugar you’re consuming.
Sadly, this is something that I see SO OFTEN in the ‘healthy eating’ world, and amongst the ‘healthy eating’ experts out there that is pretty much passes as standard, normal behavior. And that’s such a shame, because people are rarely so black and white, and even when food is a major component in their issues, it’s hardly ever the only thing contributing to their problems or difficulties.
People typically eat junk when they feel overwhelmed by life, and when their self-destructive emotional and spiritual impulses are running the show. But here’s the thing: simply switching the diet over to wholefoods / raw foods / gluten free / sugar free / macrobiotic / whatever the fad of the month is doesn’t solve the underlying emotional and spiritual issues.
Over time, it can surely ameliorate them, and begin the process of moving to a much healthier overall mindset and approach to life which puts a proper emphasis on looking after the self, and dealing with cause and effect, but food is not the whole answer.
So that’s the first way you can tell if ‘eating healthy’ has morphed into ‘eating disordered’, when absolutely everything in the world is brought down to food, or the particular diet etc that the person happens to be following.
THE SECOND RED FLAG: A RIGID, JUDGMENTAL AND CONTROLLING ATTITUDE
Another key sign that ‘eating healthy’ has become ‘eating disordered’ is when the healthy eater starts to adopt an extremely rigid, judgmental and even controlling attitude towards people in their orbit that aren’t eating healthy, according to them.
Again, this is unfortunately such normal ‘standard’ behavior in the alternative health world that it’s completely off most people’s radars. But to call a spade a spade, when people start getting all uppity about other people’s ‘lack of self-control’ that they don’t just eat kale for lunch, or jog five miles before breakfast, or contort themselves into all sorts of ‘relaxing’ poses for three hours a day, that’s another big flashing neon sign that ‘eating healthy’ has become ‘eating disordered’.
Rigid thinking is one of the key signs mental health professionals look for when diagnosing serious issues including personality disorders, etc. The more ‘rigid’ a person is, the more controlling they are, the less flexibility or ‘give’ there is in their routine, their thought processes, their ability to roll with the punches and react to ever-changing external circumstances, the bigger the problem.
Again, let’s remember that so many people only eat unhealthily in the first place due to underlying emotional and spiritual issues that aren’t being properly acknowledged and addressed.
It’s the easiest thing in the world to ‘flip’ these issues into a rigid, intolerant and judgmental approach to food and life that’s anything but really healthy.
THE THIRD RED FLAG: THEY'RE ANGRY, MISERABLE AND STRESSED!
The last telltale sign that ‘eating healthy’ is really actually ‘eating disordered’ is the person’s own mood. Invariably, when people are truly ‘eating healthy’ in a balanced, truly useful way, they feel great, they feel happy, they exude calm and joy, and they tend to be pretty laid back individuals that are easy to get on with and be around.
By contrast, when someone is ‘eating disordered’ then they’re usually full of repressed (and not so repressed…) anger, prickliness and intolerance. They tend to be wound very tight, on the ‘mega stressed’ end of the relaxation scale, and to be very hard to be around or really get on with, for any length of time, not least because they often put the burden of their own incredibly high expectations (and diet prep…) on to you.
These are the people who will tut disapprovingly when they see you holding the Starbucks paper cup, or who have to tell you how many ‘bad’ calories are in that muffin you’re eating, or who encourage you / nag you to eat different, or exercise better, or fast more ALL THE TIME!!!
No conversation can pass that doesn’t have some reference to food, and if you’re not eating disordered yourself, that usually makes for a pretty annoying, stressful and aggravating exchange of ideas.
So, to sum up: if someone isn’t glowing with joy, if they’re a martinet about food, or hyper-anxious about everything they’re eating, if they can’t go with the flow and keep feeling the need to bring up their food (figuratively speaking…) every chance they get, and to lecture people about their diets - the chances are very high that they are eating DISORDERED, not eating healthy.
Whatever they’re actually claiming or telling you about their AMAZING!!! eating habits.
In the Jewish tradition, after a close relative dies and is buried, you are meant to sit seven days of ‘shiva’ (from the Hebrew verb leyshev, to sit) - i.e. to mourn them formally for seven days.
Even in the most optimal circumstances, sitting shiva for a close relative is usually a very draining experience. But when you have to factor in unexpected deaths, frantic last minute plane rides to a different country, difficulties finding somewhere to sleep, and problems finding nourishing kosher food to eat into the equation - plus the vague unease of leaving your young teenage kids alone at home, in a completely different country - that all adds up to an enormously stressful equation.
And then there’s the other stressful parts of dealing with a close relative’s death, including sorting out their estate, dealing with other ‘difficult characters’ in the family who could snap at any moment and cut a huge swathe of dramatic discord through the whole proceedings, and (if you’re sitting shiva in the UK…) having to make four thousand cups of tea a day for all the people coming to ‘comfort’ you.
So all in all, sitting shiva for most people is actually a very difficult, traumatic experience, even in the most optimal circumstances where friends and family are caring for you, you can eat the food, you can sleep, and all your immediate family is in the same country.
After four days of sitting what I think of as ‘shiva on speed’ for my late mother-in-law in the UK, I got back to Israel late Thursday night with my husband, and felt like I was completely blank. The next day was Yom Kippur, the most important day of the year where Jews fast for 25 hours and pray that God will grant us a good, healthy, blessed year.
This year, I was so exhausted I spent most of the day knocked out in bed, and when I did pray, it was to ask God to please excuse my lack of praying - or anything Yom Kippur related - and to please give me a good year, anyway.
I was hoping to feel a bit perkier by the end of Yom Kippur, but if anything, I actually felt even more out of it and kind of empty-feeling. I could have just sat for hours on the couch without a thought in my head, completely oblivious to the world.
This is not ‘normal’ behavior for me at all, so I started to get a bit worried about it all. Until my husband reminded me that after all the stress I’d just gone through, I’d probably fried out my adrenals and needed at least a week just to process it all, before I could move on.
“There’s been so much going on, you need to just sit for a while and absorb it all,” he told me. “Once you’ve done that, you’ll get your energy and pep back, don’t worry.”
THE IMPORTANCE OF DOWN TIME
I felt very comforted by what he said, because I know he’s right. My job right now is to have some down time - even a lot of down time - to recuperate mentally and physically from the ‘shiva on speed’.
In the old days, people just weren’t able to grab last minute flights to the end of the earth to spend these fraught moments with their loved ones. On the one hand, they probably didn’t get the same closure, but they also didn’t come back from their experiences feeling more than half dead themselves.
As so often in the modern world, the ‘up’ we get from being able to do all these things comes packaged together with a mighty big ‘down’.
But I’m quite lucky, as at least I don’t have to get back to my day job, or report back into work this week. Honestly, I’m going to be out of action for at least another week - and it wasn’t even my close relative!
When people feel obliged to rush back to work so quickly after these stupendous events occur in their lives, I can’t help but think it’s storing up a huge amount of trouble for them further on down the line.
We need time to think, to process, to decompress, to grieve. That’s what the shiva itself is actually for, but in our modern world, even that process can be warped around in to some sort of ‘bereavement party’ where you just find yourself entertaining hundreds of people and making small talk, instead of sitting and crying out your heart’s secret pain.
YOU CAN'T RUSH THE GRIEVING PROCESS
So the moral of the story is, when these big things happen in your life, don’t buy into the modern world’s warped value system that tells you two weeks - MAXIMUM!!! - is enough to get over the death of a close relative, or the other massive shocks to the system that we periodically experience.
Rushing these processes only causes untold damage in the long term, because grief is not a linear emotion, and properly saying goodbye in all the myriad small ways we have to, really can and does take months.
If you feel exhausted after a very stressful experience in your life, understand that’s your body’s way of telling you to stay in the slow lane for a while, and to not rush back to ‘normal’. It’s hard sometimes to take that hint, but I know for myself that if I force matters and try to return to ‘business as usual’ too soon, it’s only going to lead to me getting wiped out for weeks, instead of a few days.
So if you’ve just had a massive shock, take a deep breath, keep your out of office on for a few more days, and give yourself, your body and your psyche the time they all really need to recover, regroup, and move on.
