What energy medicine can teach you about how to beat depression naturally

Understanding energy meridians can be a key part of your efforts to beat depression naturally.

(For more information on what Energy Meridians actually are, and how they affect your emotions, check out Explaining Energy Meridians).

The headline emotion related to the Spleen meridian is empathy, or compassion. Spleen energy can get weakened by a few different things. It gets zapped when:

  • We have too much unhealthy compassion for others, or
  • We have too little compassion for ourselves, or
  • When we don't have any compassion for anyone.

You can find out more about healthy compassion in a post called The three habits that keep you emotionally healthy

Let's explore what this clue is really telling you, when it comes to beating your depression. It's telling you that:

You can get depressed when you don't feel valued, cared-for, nurtured, 'seen' or otherwise appreciated in some fundamental way, either by you, yourself, or by some significant others in your life.

This is another, crucial, piece of the depression puzzle.

Now, let's take a look at energy medicine, to see if there are any more insights to pick up on that side of the equation. Energetically, the Spleen meridian and another energy meridian called Triple Warmer are responsible for keeping your immune system in good shape.

(Bear with me: I know you're scratching your head and wondering what the heck a 'Triple Warmer' is, and whether you should be ordering the fries to go with it, but it's actually all still connected to depression, I promise.)

Where Triple Warmer fights off, or tries to avoid, all the threats and invaders to your health, Spleen tries to keep you healthy by keeping you happy. The first meridian that the Triple Warmer meridian takes energy from to power its 'fight or flight response' is the Spleen meridian.

Why does this matter, and what's the connection to depression?

Energetically, the Spleen meridian is the 'happy' energy in the body. When it's weak or depleted, it becomes that much harder to feel cheerful and upbeat, and your ability to adapt to your environment and to your circumstances - especially your more challenging, difficult and taxing circumstances - becomes compromised.

So the next piece of the puzzle is that: if your Spleen meridian is energetically weak, you're going to find it pretty hard to keep happy, and to stay out of depression.

Of course, this can all be fixed! Read this post for some ideas for how to start strengthening spleen, and this one for ideas on how to get out of homolateral energy.
