Here's a secret: all my life, I've been a severe hypochondriac. Whatever small physical symptom or discomfort I experienced, in my secret self I was always sure that it was the precursor of something horrendously catastrophic, God forbid.
I tried to manage these underground, barely-acknowledged fears in a myriad of ways: for a few years', I worked so hard that I didn't have time to even register weird symptoms, let alone waste time obsessing over what they all meant. Then, I moved to a country with free healthcare, and for a couple of years, I adopted the 'get reassured by the doctor' strategy - until one day that back-fired on me, big time.
I had a funny lump in the top of my mouth (that turned out to be a nothing except a massive stress-induced mouth ulcer type thing), but the doctor noticed some discoloration on my lips, and suggested I get it checked out.
I did, and a few weeks' later I ended up having a procedure where my lips got cut to pieces and then stitched back together. I had no idea that's what I was signing up to, even to the point of believing that the pre-op anaesthetic was actually the procedure. They made it sound so easy and painless, I had the shock of my life when the surgeon actually started cutting my face open.
I came home shell-shocked, with hugely swollen lips and a quiet determination to not trust the doctors, or go near them, ever again.
A hypochondriac's worse nightmare
Not that it was so easy to stick to that, as over the next three years, I was assailed with all sorts of physical health issues, from blurry eyes to complete exhaustion, to enormous stomach aches, weird itching sensations, to bumps that came and went, migraines, dizziness, throat problems and a bunch of other things to boot.
It was a hypochondriac's worse nightmare! But I was determined that whatever happened, I wasn't going back to the doctors unless I absolutely had to. So I started reading and researching all the alternative, holistic and complementary health stuff I could find.
I went to a nutritionist, who gave me a big, helpful nudge down a completely different path of green smoothies, whole wheat flour and seaweed. I also went to an energy healer, who told me I had candida and got me drinking down grapefruit seed extract like there was no tomorrow. And you know what? That initial big change in my diet really, really helped. For about a year.
Unresolved emotional issues are what's REALLY making us sick
But then, I started to get even more troubling physical symptoms again - and I was already eating my sprouted spelt bread and making my quinoa cakes - so clearly, something else was behind it all.
I went to another healer, and discovered that the 'something else' was primarily a whole bunch of unresolved emotional issues that I'd stuffed down and tried to forget about. But my body couldn't cope with all that repressed resentment, anger and hatred any more, and was literally cracking under the strain.
I had to face a lot of unpleasant truths, let go of a lot of poisonous thoughts and feelings, and forgive a whole bunch of people, including myself. In the process, I started learning whatever I could about the emotional and spiritual connections between mind, body and soul, as I realized that my hypochondria was actually rooted in a much deeper, spiritual understanding that physical illness was only the final piece in the puzzle.
'The problem', whatever it was, always starts out at the spiritual level; only if it's not caught and addressed there, does it move down into the mind and emotions; and from there it moves into a physical health issue or symptom.
The more I learned, both in the deepest Jewish sources, and in various energy medicine disciplines like acupressure, acupuncture, aromatherapy and Su Jok, to name but a few, the more I could map this progression, and use it to start to decode my health messages at an earlier stage of their process, before they hit me at the physical level.
At some point, I realized that the information I was learning could be set down, and shared with others. There were a few, simple tools required to decode the mystery of human health, that could be boiled down to:
If people could be taught those three tools, they could start to relate to their physical illnesses and emotional problems as prompts for transformation, well-being and happiness, instead of panicking about'symptoms' and rushing off ever five seconds for another set of tests, or packet of pills.
As well as saving them a fortune, and making illness a much less scary, fraught experience, that information could also help them to find greater purpose in life, figure out what path they really needed to be in, and to really start to live life authentically, as the real, amazing 'them' God designed them to be.
That's how: 'Talk to God and Fix Your Health: The Real Reasons Why We Get Sick' came into being.
I wrote this book to:
And if you're just curious about how 'holistic health' is actually meant to work, and why the spiritual dimension is all-important when it comes to staying fit, active and happy for as long as possible, this book pulls together a wealth of information from a variety of sources in one volume, that you just won't find anywhere else.
